Deciding Between Independent Living vs. Assisted Living
Choosing between independent living and assisted living depends on your senior loved one’s current health, lifestyle and budget. Here’s an overview of how the two types of senior housing differ:
Independent living communities provide general housing for active seniors, with some convenient amenities like housekeeping, dining and transportation. Seniors live independently in apartment homes and can come and go freely. Limited personal care may be available for help with medications or bathing, but staffing is minimal. The cost is typically lower than assisted living. Independent living is suitable for mobile seniors who don’t require significant daily assistance.
Assisted living facilities provide housing along with personalized care and supervision to seniors who require help with daily activities. Licensed staff assists with bathing, dressing, medications and mobility around the clock. Registered nurses oversee care and health monitoring. Meals, housekeeping, activities and transportation are provided. Assisted living costs more for the increased care, but allows seniors to age in place longer before needing a nursing home.
When deciding between the two options, consider your loved one’s health needs and capabilities. Do they take multiple medications that need administration? Is mobility an issue? Can they feed or bathe themselves safely? Do chronic conditions require frequent monitoring? For increased frailty or medical needs, assisted living is the better choice.
Also factor in your senior’s personality and lifestyle. Do they cherish independence? An active social life? Familiar routines? Understanding preferences helps ensure they transition to a fulfilling senior living environment.
Schedule tours of both types of communities to get a feel for daily life. Consult your elder and their medical providers to make the appropriate financial investment in their care as abilities evolve. With careful consideration of needs and desires, the right senior living can be selected.
